A lthough the Torrequebrada golf course might seem tortuous and difficult at first sight, there is a very good reason that makes it worthwhile choice: its fantastic views of the sea. Designed by Jose Gancedo, a born nature lover, the club was opened in 1976, and since then it has hosted the Spanish Open as well as a long list of other top-class tournaments. to get to the Torrequebrada from Málaga it's essential to take the motorway and then turn off at Torrequebrada Casino. the club house, about two miles from the Casino, is very popular with regular visitors. The club has a short course with numerous trees and bushes and, as if these natural hazards werent sufficient, six of its holes incorporate water hazards and bunkers. An 18 hole course, Torrequebrada is a rare jewel set between the mountains and the sea. The well-kept greens are difficult and their size and inclination make them unique. Another problem to be faced is the strong wind which usually blows in this area. For the average golfer it's complicated and balls are frequently lost. the course is designed to test one's skill on every one of its 18 holes. the water hazards and the bunkers blend in with the 100 or so different varieties of trees and plants. the grass of the fairways and the greens contribute to the high quality of the course. As the fairways differs so much from hole to hole, it's very necessary to choose the correct club. out of all the holes the 10th and the 16th, both par 4s, are perhaps the most outstanding ones. the former is 383 metres long and the only which has a blind second drive. With the latter, if the tee-off is sufficiently long the second shot will have to be taken downhill towards the elevated green, whose flag will only be partly visible. The majority of birdies have been obtained at the 7th hole and, if the wind is favourable, it's possible to reach the green in one. Among the most important golfing events to be held at Torrequebrada was the 53rd Spanish Open. the club also has tennis and squashy courts, a sauna and a swimming pool. the course occupies a strategic position on the Costa del Sol, between Torremolinos and Fuengirola, and is only 11 miles away from the airport. the Benalmádena motorway borders the course along with the old 340 arterial road, now converted into a dual-carriageway.
